Brown Noise, Music, or Binaural Beats: Which Helps You Concentrate?

By Mark Ellis

People are wildly different in what helps them focus. Here's a comparison so you can run your own test.

SoundProsCons
SilenceFree, no distractionHard to find; small noises become distracting
White/brown noiseMasks chatter and trafficSome find it fatiguing
Instrumental musicPleasant, boosts mood for manyLyrics or favourite songs can pull attention
Nature soundsCalming, non-repetitiveVaries a lot in quality
Binaural beatsSteady, designed for background useRequires headphones; evidence is mixed

How to test fairly

Pick one type of task. Spend three sessions with each sound and note how many focused minutes you managed and how you felt. After two weeks you'll have real data about you, which beats any general claim.

Volume matters

Whatever you choose, keep it quiet. Loud audio over long periods can damage hearing; a good rule is that you should still be able to hear someone speaking near you.
